PIM systems for Shopware compared: what does a PIM really cost?

If you are looking for a PIM system for Shopware, you quickly find names like Akeneo, Pimcore or Plytix, but rarely honest numbers. This page puts the well-known PIM systems side by side: what they cost, what the connection to Shopware adds and which approach pays off for which shop.

Key points
  • Free options exist as open source to host yourself (Pimcore Community, AtroPIM, Akeneo Community) or as a small free plan (Plytix Standard). You still pay for hosting, maintenance and the connection to Shopware.
  • Hosted PIM systems start at around €150 to €400 per month and grow with the number of products, users and support. Enterprise editions quickly reach five figures per year.
  • With external systems you add a connector, an implementation project and the ongoing sync with Shopware.
  • An external PIM pays off when many channels outside Shopware are fed from one source. If Shopware is your main channel, a PIM directly in the admin is often enough.

PIM systems and costs at a glance

Prices come from the vendors' pricing pages or, where they do not publish numbers, from publicly available third-party sources. They change regularly, so check the current state with the vendor before you decide.

Licence is not total cost

A PIM system with a €0 licence is rarely free to run. With an external PIM these items typically come on top:

Cost itemExternal PIMPIM in the Shopware admin
Server and hostingOwn application with database, search and backupsRuns in your Shopware installation
Updates and securityOwn system, own updatesPlugin update in the Shopware admin
Connector to ShopwareLicence, setup and maintenance with every Shopware updateNot needed
Implementation projectModel and migrate attributes, families, categories and translationsExisting products are in the PIM right away
Day-to-day syncTwo data states, sync runs, the question which system leadsOne data state, changes apply directly
Other channelsCentral source for many systemsVia feeds (CSV, XML, JSON) and CSV export

A PIM directly in the Shopware admin saves these items because there is no second data store. In return it is focused on Shopware as the channel. More on this difference: Shopware PIM comparison: standard, plugin or external PIM.

The PIM systems in detail

Plytix

Plytix is a pure cloud PIM with a free entry plan for small catalogues. Above that come Pro from €149 and Enterprise from €699 per month, each rising with the number of products. A good fit for brands that want to feed many channels and marketplaces from one cloud interface.

AtroPIM

AtroPIM is open source and can be run for free on your own server. Many extra features are paid modules, and the connection to Shopware also runs through a connector module. According to the vendor's shop, the hosted version starts at €400 per month or €4,320 per year, including basic support.

Pimcore

Pimcore is an extensive platform for PIM, MDM, DAM and CMS. The Community Edition is licensed under the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) and is free for companies with less than 5 million annual revenue, above that a commercial edition is required. Pimcore pays off above all with complex data models and teams with their own development capacity. More: Pimcore and Shopware: external PIM or PIM in the admin?

Akeneo

Akeneo is considered particularly user-friendly and is common among Shopware agencies. The Community Edition is open source and self-hosted, official support for version 7 ended on 30 September 2026. The hosted editions are considerably more expensive. The connection to Shopware runs through third-party connectors.

Ergonode

Ergonode is a cloud PIM with a clean interface and an integration for Shopware. The vendor only quotes prices on request.

PIM for Shopware (PIM in the admin)

Instead of a second system, PIM for Shopware extends the Shopware admin with the tools that are missing for large ranges: bulk editing with snapshot, variant generator, AI texts with four providers, translation via DeepL, feed generator, data quality dashboard and approval workflow. There is no connector and no sync, because the PIM works directly on the Shopware data. The limit: channels outside Shopware are fed via feeds and CSV, the PIM is not a central data source for the whole company.

Which PIM system fits your shop?

An external PIM system fits if ...

  • print catalogues, apps, marketplaces or several shop systems are fed from one source
  • master data is managed centrally across the company
  • a team or agency runs an additional application
  • there is budget for implementation and ongoing operation

A PIM in the Shopware admin fits if ...

  • Shopware is your main channel
  • you maintain many products, variants or languages
  • you want to start right away, without a project and a second system
  • the budget is around €100 per month

Both can also be combined: an external system or an ERP delivers the master data, and in the Shopware admin you refine texts, translations and SEO data. So that the next sync does not overwrite this work, there is the protection against external systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is a PIM system?

A PIM system (Product Information Management) is the central place where product data such as texts, properties, variants, images and translations are maintained. From there they reach the shop and other channels. The basics are explained in What is a PIM for Shopware?

What does a PIM system cost?

The range is wide: from €0 for self-hosted open source through around €150 to €400 per month for hosted entry plans up to five-figure yearly amounts for enterprise editions. External systems add hosting, connector and implementation.

Is there a free PIM system for Shopware?

Yes, as open source to host yourself, for example Pimcore Community (for companies under 5 million revenue), AtroPIM or Akeneo Community, or as a small free plan with Plytix. Hosting, maintenance and the connection to Shopware are not included.

Does Shopware need a PIM system at all?

With a small catalogue in one language the standard admin is often enough. With many products, variants, languages or several people maintaining data, a PIM pays off, either as an external system or directly in the admin.

Which PIM system is best for Shopware?

It depends on how many channels besides Shopware you feed. For many channels from one central source, Pimcore or Akeneo are common. If Shopware is the main channel, a PIM directly in the admin is usually the faster and cheaper way.
