Shopware category texts and category SEO
Maintain category texts, meta data and SEO URLs right in the category tree - with a completeness indicator, AI texts, translation and CSV for all languages.
- Tree on the left, editing on the right: name, description, meta title, meta description, keywords and SEO URL per channel and language.
- A completeness value per category shows where description, meta texts or image are missing.
- AI texts for one category, a selection or entire subtrees.
- Translation via DeepL or AI, CSV import and export with all languages.
Category SEO in standard Shopware
For many shops category pages are the most important entry pages from search: they bundle the range around a search term such as "garden chairs" or "work shoes". In standard Shopware you maintain their texts and meta data category by category in catalogue management, one language at a time. There is no overview of which categories still lack a description or meta description. With a tree of a hundred categories or more, the deeper levels in particular often stay empty.
Category SEO with the PIM's category management
You open category management from the PIM product list. At the top you choose sales channel and language, on the left is the tree with a search field, on the right the editing area of the selected category. You move categories by dragging them in the tree.
Description & SEO
In the "Description & SEO" section you maintain description, meta title, meta description, keywords and the SEO URL as a slug. The slug applies to the selected sales channel and language. If you change it, the old address is kept as a redirect. For the category image you enter the alt text directly.
Completeness at a glance
Next to every category the tree shows a percentage. It is made up of description, meta title, meta description and image and is colour-coded as low (below 40 %), medium and high (80 % and above). The filter shows the weak categories selectively.
Master data, layout and products
Type (page, folder or link), visibility in the main navigation, layout, default sorting of the listing and custom fields are in the same view. You assign products via a dynamic product group or a saved PIM filter preset.
Step by step: category texts for an entire tree
- Choose channel and language: open category management and set sales channel and language.
- Find weak categories: filter the tree for a low completeness value and select the affected categories.
- Create AI texts: open "AI texts", choose the fields description, meta title, meta description and keywords, the provider and the tone. With "Include subcategories" the whole subtree is processed.
- Add instructions: enter further instructions if needed, such as a note on free delivery. Keep "Overwrite existing texts" off as long as you only want to fill gaps.
- Check slugs: review the SEO URL of important categories and adjust it if necessary.
- Follow up with languages: switch the language and use "Translate" or "Copy from default language" for the selected categories.
Tips from practice
- Watch meta lengths: meta title and meta description follow the same length settings as products, configurable in the config matrix in the "Texts & Translations" tab.
- Switch in bulk: you set several categories active or inactive in one step and show or hide them in the navigation. The last bulk change can be undone.
- Translate with formatting: when translating you choose source and target language plus DeepL or an AI provider. DeepL keeps the HTML tags of the description.
- Back up before restructuring: before a CSV import you download a backup of the current state. In addition, "Back up tree as JSON" saves the complete tree with all languages, custom fields and IDs.
- Preset instead of stream: a PIM preset can express more criteria than a dynamic product group. If it currently matches no products, the category is not emptied as a precaution.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find category management?
In the PIM product list via the categories button. Whether a user may open it is controlled by the "Manage categories" function switch in the config matrix.
Which texts does the AI create for categories?
Description, meta title, meta description and keywords. You choose provider, tone and optional further instructions, if you like for all subcategories as well.
What happens to the old URL when I change the slug?
The old URL is kept as a redirect. If you leave the field empty, Shopware creates the category URL automatically as usual.
Can I edit categories via CSV?
Yes. The export contains the complete tree of the selected sales channel with columns per field and language plus custom fields. On import the parent category is resolved via the parentPath column.
How do I spot incomplete categories?
Every category shows a completeness value in the tree based on description, meta title, meta description and image. A filter shows only categories with a low, medium or high value.
