Translate Shopware products
Bring product names, descriptions and meta texts into further languages - via DeepL, via AI or as a copy of the default language, for one product or for hundreds in a single run.
- DeepL translates straight from the detail view, in variant editing, for categories and in bulk edit.
- In bulk edit, ChatGPT or Claude can create individual texts per channel and language.
- "Copy from default language" fills empty target languages, optionally reworked by AI.
- The "Translation" filter shows where name or description are missing in a language.
Translating products in standard Shopware
Shopware stores texts per language. In the standard admin you switch the content language, open the product and enter name, description and meta fields by hand - product by product. There is no built-in machine translation. Anyone launching a new sales channel with its own language faces a catalogue in which the target language is simply empty. And because empty translations fall back to the default language, the gap often does not even show in the admin.
Shopware translations with the PIM: three ways
1. DeepL for precise translations
In the product detail view the "DeepL Translate" button opens a language picker. You translate into a single language or into all at once. Name, description, meta title, meta description and keywords are transferred, based on the texts of the default language. For variants with their own texts the same button is available in the variant dialog.
2. AI for independent texts per language
In bulk edit, ChatGPT or Claude create texts for the selected target languages. With "Unique texts per channel & language" every combination gets its own text instead of the same text landing everywhere. The basis is always the texts of the default language; your own instruction to the AI applies to all products of the run.
3. Copy from default language
Sometimes it is enough to fill the target language first, for example for a second German-speaking channel with its own language. The action copies the selected fields unchanged and free of charge. With "Have the AI rework the texts" the AI instead transfers the texts into the target language and rephrases them according to your instruction. If a request fails, the original text is saved so the target language does not stay empty.
Step by step: filling missing translations in bulk
- Set up DeepL: in the config matrix, "Texts & Translations" tab, enter your DeepL API key, enable DeepL translation and switch on "DeepL translation in bulk edits".
- Filter the gaps: in the product list, open the "Translation" filter, choose the target language and "Name missing", "Description missing" or "Both missing".
- Save as preset: save the filter as a preset. That way you can repeat the same run later for new products.
- Open bulk edit: choose the selection or the preset filter as the source and switch to the area with AI texts and translations.
- Choose the method: enable "DeepL Translation" and tick the target languages per sales channel - or use "Copy from default language", ChatGPT or Claude.
- Apply and check: confirm the run. Before the change a snapshot saves the previous state, provided snapshots are enabled. Then check samples in the detail view.
Tips from practice
- Maintain the default language first: all three ways read from the default language. Mistakes there multiply in every target language.
- Use the master prompt: the central instruction in the configuration is also sent when copying from the default language. Form of address, brand spelling or banned phrases are defined once.
- HTML is preserved: for categories DeepL keeps the HTML tags of the description, so formatting is not lost.
- Keep an eye on costs: in bulk edit every product is sent to the API individually. With many products and languages the requests to the provider add up.
- Do not forget categories: in category management you translate several categories from a source into a target language, via DeepL or AI, and can copy from the default language there too.
- Spreadsheets for translation agencies: if you work with external translators, export the texts as CSV with language columns and import them again afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my own DeepL account?
Yes. You store your DeepL API key in the config matrix in the "Texts & Translations" tab and enable DeepL translation there. Bulk edit has its own switch.
Are existing translations overwritten?
Not by default. DeepL only fills empty fields unless you deliberately tick "Overwrite existing translations". "Copy from default language" also only fills empty fields without the "Overwrite existing texts" option.
Which AI providers are available for translations?
In bulk edit ChatGPT, Claude and DeepL. In the product detail view Mistral and Gemini are additionally available for text generation; for categories you choose between DeepL and the configured AI providers.
How do I find products without a translation?
The product list has the "Translation" filter: you pick a language and then "Name missing", "Description missing" or "Both missing". Save the result as a preset and use it directly as the source for bulk edit.
Can I import translations via CSV as well?
Yes. On export, further languages appear as separate trans_ columns that you edit in the spreadsheet and import again. Details are on the page about multilingual CSV import.
