Shopware image alt texts and file names: maintained right on the product
Meaningful file names and maintained alt texts are among the simplest SEO levers for Shopware product images, yet they are missing in many shops. The PIM brings file name, Shopware image alt texts and title straight into the product's image management, along with upload, cover image, copying to variants and image filters.
- On the image in the "Images & media" section: edit file name, alt text and title in one step.
- Renaming the file runs server-side via a dedicated plugin endpoint.
- Upload images by drag and drop, set the cover, change the order, copy to variants.
- Image filters for parent products and variants, image columns in CSV import and export.
Images and alt texts in standard Shopware
In Shopware the alt text belongs to the media record, not to the product. To maintain it, you switch to media management, look for the file there and enter the text. The file name is usually determined by the upload: the camera produces names like "IMG_4711.jpg", the supplier export product numbers without meaning. For image search and accessibility these are wasted signals. With hundreds of products and several images each, maintenance via media management quickly becomes an endless task because the link to the product is missing.
Shopware image alt texts and file names in the PIM
In the PIM detail view, the "Images & media" section shows all images of the product with a preview. The edit icon on an image opens three fields:
- Filename: the name of the file without extension. Renaming runs server-side via the plugin endpoint
/api/_action/staw-pim-direct/media/{id}/rename. If it fails, for example because the name is already taken, the PIM reports the reason. - Alt text: the alternative text for search engines and screen readers.
- Title: the title attribute of the image.
"Save" stores all three values on the media record. Because the alt text belongs to the medium, it applies wherever the same file is used. Note: changing the file name also changes the image URL.
Upload, cover image and order
Below the images there is an upload zone: drag files in or select them by clicking, several at once, with a progress display. The media manager lets you pick existing files. "As cover" makes an image the cover image, and you change the order by dragging. With "Cover image always in first position" in the config matrix, the cover is always shown first. If you remove an image from the product, the media file is kept.
Copying images to variants
"Copy images to variants" creates the parent product's images as the variants' own images for all variants that do not have any yet, including order and cover image. Variants with their own images remain unchanged and are listed in the message. In the variant view you can also upload images for a single variant; an uploaded image becomes the variant's own image.
Finding gaps: image filters and dashboard
The product list filters by "With images" or "Without images" and separately by "Cover image (main product)" and "Cover image (variants)". The variant filter finds parent products where at least one variant has no image of its own. The PIM dashboard counts products without images and leads to the filtered list with one click.
Images in CSV import and export
Via CSV you load images with the columns "Cover URL" and "All images (pipe-separated)". The image mode defines whether images are appended or replaced ("Replace (delete all)"). Parallel uploads per product and concurrent products during image import are set in the config matrix. Export and feed also offer absolute image URLs.
Category images with alt text
Categories also get a category image from the media library or by upload in category management, with a language-specific alt text.
Step by step: making images SEO-ready
- Find gaps: filter the product list by "Without images" or "Cover image (variants)".
- Open the product: go to the "Images & media" section in the detail view.
- Add images: drag missing images into the upload zone and set the right cover image.
- Edit the image: click the edit icon and give it a meaningful file name, for example "stainless-steel-pot-24-cm".
- Alt text and title: describe in a short sentence what the image shows, and save.
- Supply variants: use "Copy images to variants" if variants without their own images should display images.
Use cases
- Camera file names: "IMG_4711" becomes "leather-backpack-brown-front".
- Accessibility: maintain alt texts for the most important categories and top sellers first.
- Variants without image in the listing: set the "Cover image (variants)" filter and copy images in one go.
- New range from a supplier: load image URLs via CSV, then add file names and alt texts for the most important products.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I maintain the alt text of a product image?
In the PIM detail view in the "Images & media" section. The edit icon on the image opens the fields file name, alt text and title.
Is the file really renamed?
Yes. The PIM renames the file server-side via a dedicated endpoint. Changing the file name also changes the image URL.
Does the alt text apply to this product only?
No. The alt text is stored on the media record and applies wherever the same file is used.
How do variants get the parent product's images?
With "Copy images to variants". Variants without their own images receive the images including order and cover image; variants with their own images remain unchanged.
Can I import images via CSV?
Yes, via the columns "Cover URL" and "All images (pipe-separated)". The image mode defines whether images are appended or replaced.
