Shopware variant prices and stock: list, matrix and inheritance
Maintain Shopware variant prices and stock without opening each variant: the PIM shows prices, pseudo prices, stock and the active status of all variants in a list or as a matrix of two properties. Empty fields inherit from the parent product, shared values are copied in one go.
- Variant list with directly editable price, pseudo price, stock and active switch.
- Variant matrix from two property groups: rows and columns are options, the cell is price, stock or active.
- Visible inheritance: an empty price field shows the parent's price and inherits it.
- Copy price, purchase price, stock and other fields from the parent to all variants.
Variant prices in standard Shopware
In Shopware a variant inherits the parent's price as long as it has no price of its own. Stock, on the other hand, always belongs to the individual variant. With a few combinations that is quickly maintained. With six colours and eight sizes you have 48 variants, and it gets confusing: which price belongs to the combination "red, XXL"? Which variants carry their own price, which inherit? And if all variants should get the same purchase price or delivery time, the standard admin has you maintain them per variant.

The variant list
In the detail view of a parent product the variant list shows image, name, product number, price (gross), pseudo price, stock and active per row. You edit the values directly in the row; they are saved when you leave the field, with a short confirmation. The PIM calculates the net price via the tax rate, and an existing pseudo price is kept when you change the price. If you clear the price field, the variant inherits the parent's price again, which is shown as a grey placeholder in the field. A search field and a filter by property option narrow down long lists; 10, 25, 50 or 100 variants are shown per page. Which columns appear is set in the config matrix in the "Variants" tab.
The variant matrix
From two property groups on there is a matrix view next to the list. The options of one group form the rows, those of the other the columns, for example colour and size. Via "Value" you choose what the cells show: price, stock or active. Every cell is directly editable; combinations without a variant are marked with "-". Default view, default value and the maximum number of variants for the matrix (default 500) are set in the config matrix in the "Variants" tab.
The variant window
For all other values you open a variant in its own window. The "Price & base price" area holds selling price, purchase price and list price, each gross and net, as well as the lowest price of the last 30 days. Under availability you maintain the stock and see the available stock next to it. If the variant has no tier prices of its own, those of the main product apply.
Copy values from the parent
In the detail view of a parent product, "Copy to variants" transfers selected fields to all variants: price, pseudo price, purchase price, stock, delivery time, free shipping, weight and dimensions, EAN and active status. In bulk edit you copy the volume prices from the main product to all variants for many products at once.
Step by step: set a surcharge for large sizes
- Open the product: open the parent product in the PIM detail view and go to the variants.
- Choose the matrix: switch to the matrix view and set "Value" to price.
- Enter prices: enter the higher prices in the XL and XXL columns. The other cells remain unchanged.
- Check inheritance: switch back to the list. Variants with an empty price field show the parent price as a placeholder.
- Update stock: set "Value" to stock and enter the counted quantities.
- Switch off sold-out items: with "Value" set to active you deactivate single combinations with one click.
Use cases
- Stocktaking: enter the stock of all colour-size combinations in the matrix, cell by cell, without opening a window.
- Back to one price: clear the variants' own prices so that all of them follow the parent again.
- New purchase price: maintain it on the parent and pass it on to all variants via "Copy to variants".
- Many products: price changes across whole ranges run through bulk edit, see bulk change Shopware prices.
Frequently asked questions
When is the variant matrix available?
As soon as a product has variants from at least two property groups. With only one group the list view is available.
How do I reset a variant to the parent price?
Clear the price field of the variant in the list. The variant then inherits the parent price again, which is shown as a placeholder in the field.
Can stock be inherited from the parent?
No. In Shopware stock and product number always belong to the individual variant. With "Copy to variants" you can, however, copy the parent stock to all variants.
How many variants does the matrix show?
Up to 500 by default. You change the value in the config matrix in the "Variants" tab.
Do the main product tier prices also apply to variants?
Yes, as long as the variant has no tier prices of its own. Tier prices of the variant itself take precedence.
